Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep its systems running.

BMR accounts for ~60–70% of typical daily energy use. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the modern standard: it's accurate within a few percent for most adults and is the formula Calcly uses.

BMR drops with age and rises with lean body mass. Crash diets that lose muscle alongside fat depress BMR and make weight maintenance harder afterward.
