Futures trading basics

A futures contract is an obligation to buy or sell the underlying at a fixed price on a future date. NSE offers index futures (NIFTY, BANK NIFTY, FINNIFTY) and futures on ~190 individual stocks, with monthly expiry on the last Thursday.

Key concepts

  • Lot size: contract quantity β€” set by the exchange per symbol.
  • Margin: SPAN + exposure, ~12–20% of contract value.
  • Basis: futures βˆ’ spot, narrows toward expiry.
  • Rollover: close near-month and open next-month before expiry.

Tax treatment

Futures P&L is non-speculative business income, taxed at slab rate. Turnover for audit thresholds = absolute profit/loss on every trade.
