Options trading basics
An option is a contract giving the right (not obligation) to buy (call) or sell (put) the underlying at a strike price on expiry. In India, NIFTY and BANK NIFTY are the most liquid index options, with weekly and monthly expiries.
Key concepts
- ATM/ITM/OTM: at-, in-, or out-of-the-money relative to spot.
- IV: implied volatility — the option market's view of future moves.
- Greeks: Delta (direction), Gamma (curvature), Theta (decay), Vega (IV sensitivity), Rho (rates).
- Margin: buyers pay only premium; sellers post SPAN + exposure margin.
Tax treatment
Options are non-speculative business income taxed at slab rate. Turnover = absolute P&L per trade; tax audit may apply if turnover exceeds prescribed limits.
