What is an ETF?

An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is a basket of securities — most often tracking an index — that trades on the exchange like a stock. ETFs combine the diversification of a mutual fund with the tradability of a share, and typically come with much lower expense ratios than active mutual funds.

Common ETF categories in India

  • Equity index: NIFTY 50, NIFTY Next 50, Sensex, midcap, smallcap.
  • Sectoral / thematic: Bank, IT, FMCG, PSU, momentum, low-volatility.
  • Gold & silver: physical-backed bullion ETFs (no purity / storage hassle).
  • Debt: liquid, G-Sec and target-maturity ETFs.
  • International: Nasdaq-100, S&P 500, Hang Seng feeders.

Tax treatment

  • Equity ETFs: equity tax — LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25 L; STCG 20%.
  • Gold/Silver/Debt/International ETFs: taxed at slab rate (post-Apr 2023).
