Listed equities trade on the NSE and BSE with T+1 settlement. You can buy stocks for delivery (held in your demat) or intraday (squared off the same day). For higher leverage on delivery, use MTF (Margin Trading Facility) — your broker funds part of the position against pledged collateral.
Charges to know
- Brokerage: often ₹0 on delivery, flat ₹20/order on intraday and F&O.
- STT: 0.1% on delivery (both legs), 0.025% on intraday sell.
- Exchange + SEBI + GST + stamp duty: small slabs added on top.
Tax treatment
- LTCG (held > 1 year): 12.5% above ₹1.25 L exempt per year.
- STCG (held ≤ 1 year): 20%.
- Intraday and F&O: taxed as business income at slab rate.
